The Enoki mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) embodies resilience in the post-industrial landscape, thriving through winter when other life retreats. Its clusters emerge like tiny lanterns in the darkness, their honey-colored caps illuminating dead wood with new life. Through my macro lens, their slender stems reveal a remarkable adaptability - varying their form based on available light, stretching or clustering as needed to survive. Their presence on former colliery lands speaks to nature's persistence: while humans once extracted energy from ancient carbon deep underground, these fungi now metabolise more recent carbon, turning dead matter into nutrients that feed future life. Enoki continues its vital work through winter's harsh conditions, reminding us that transformation is a year-round process, and that life finds a way to flourish even in the most challenging circumstances.
